The individual who trusts to luck for their clothing is apt to wear rags, and the one who depends on it for food is sure to go hungry. We hear a great deal about the wonderful things that have been done by chance, but we seldom take the time to examine them. We read that sir Isaac Newton, sitting in his garden one day, "Chanced to see an apple fall to the ground," and this set him to thinking, and he discovered the laws of gravitation. Now, ever since the first apple fell from the first tree in Eden, people have been watching that very commonplace occurrence. We might extend the field so as to embrace oranges, coconuts, and all the fruits and nuts which have been falling to the ground — yet they set no person to thinking, simply because not one of the millions of people who "chanced" to see the incident, "chanced" to have the reasoning powers of the great English scientist. The falling of the apple in Newton's garden thus was not a chance, but an ordinary incident, which was made much of in the mind of an extraordinary man.

Having talked with you about the importance of finding, making, and keeping friends, the next resource that I want to see upon the asset side of your personal balance sheet is ability in the art of cooperation. This is a characteristic in which the technically trained person is often found to be lamentably weak. But I think that the weakness may be readily explained and improved upon. The scientific method in which we are all trained is a method of analysis. Analysis is essentially critical and our viewpoint tends to be likewise. The error which we frequently make is in assuming that the critical attitude demands individuality of action, as well as thought, and we then adopt a non-cooperative attitude. We view industry through the eyes of a reformer, as something to be revolutionized, rather than evolutionized. Business, of course, does need independent thinkers and idealists. And the last thing we demand of executives is “mass thinking.” But business also demands of you a practical vision of present conditions and a willingness to enter the firing line and work with the others in an attempt to better a given situation.

While what you want to do appears to be subordinate to what you can do, so much do I believe in the assistance of co-operation and the value of desire, that I would place "want to do" ahead of "can do." I would advise you, first to consider what you want to do, and then determine whether or not you can do it. If you find that what you want to do you cannot do well, then make no attempt in that direction and choose something else which you want to do, and continue the process until what you want to do and what you can do connect. That is the key to all success and has nothing to do with modern religiosity, creeds, or beliefs. I will present one hundred gold dollars to any person over 16 years of age who fully follows my directions and having done so fails to get from poverty to plenty — and another hundred to the one who follows my directions to go from Philadelphia to New York and fails. The two are equally sure. Obeying all of the following rules will make any person wealthy: Number 1) Work always so faithfully that somebody other than your employer will seek your services at a higher rate of pay. Work temporarily at any kind of work, for any rate of pay you can get. Never grumble at any imposition put upon you — but by faith in your higher-self draw yourself into better circumstances. Number 2) Conceal your dislikes, hold your tongue, and watch for something better. Do all your work as well as possible and let quantity be secondary. Never think evil.
