As UBS continues to hit new milestones in thematic and sustainable investing, the bank has produced a new longer-term investment initiative. The new programme of “Future Of....” pieces of meta-thematic research focuses on challenges that resonate with clients and provide associated investment solutions with a strong sustainability component. The first in the new series is ‘The Future of Waste’. About 30 per cent of food produced globally is wasted at a cost of $1tn per year, while 10 per cent of people go hungry. One of the report’s editors in chief and one of its co-authors join us to shine a light on opportunities to mitigate costs and issues associated with waste, while targeting compelling returns.

Both high-net-worth individuals and business owners have a more upbeat outlook entering the new year, with cash levels and concerns over domestic politics declining. The panel discusses the role that home bias plays in informing optimism, considers the lessons of the past 12 months and finds out what tops the list of concerns for investors this year, wherever they are in the world.

We’re in Davos where UBS published a white paper unveiling its Climate Aware framework to help harness private capital to close the climate finance gap. It’s the fourth time that UBS has addressed the Sustainable Development Goals in its white papers published at the WEF. This latest piece was titled: “Becoming climate aware: mobilising capital to help meet the climate change goals” and found a ready audience at an event where the climate crisis was very much at the heart of the narrative.
