How hard is it to ask for help? Technically it’s not hard: Identify and verbalize. But there’s a lot more to it. We need to accept we don’t know what we’re doing. We need to be comfortable sharing our lack of knowledge with whoever it is we’re going to ask for help. We need to know it’s OK to not know everything. It’s difficult when we’re in the moment but no man (or woman) is an island. We depend on collaboration and cooperation with others. In this podcast episode we discuss the cycle of pain and how being hurt by others is what makes us hurt others…but it doesn’t have to be that way. We do not have to let fear govern our life. Shahin suggests that the reason we are so activated by fear is because we have been practicing it more than love, kindness and respect. We can overcome the fear and hate if we put our mind to it. An extreme example is the reconciliation of the Hutus and Tutsis after the Rwanda genocide. You can read about it and view some very moving photos here and here. If they were able to overcome their differences and put their weapons down and unite with their enemies, how can we not? Name your ‘enemy’ and try to understand him/her/it/they. It’s by accepting and understanding that you can move on and stop the cycle of pain. Episode 025: Interview with Greg Schwartz about how Men can be the Best Version of Themselves when Online Dating

  In this episode of Love & the Modern Man, we discuss a recent article in The Pool: Is this the reason that men won’t defend women in public? The premise of the opinion piece is that men, when they are one-on-one with a woman, show solidarity and empathy, and offer support and understanding for their points of view (on feminism and gender dynamics but also other less ‘polemic’ subjects too) but once in a group they huddle together with a boys vs. girls mentality. We discuss if it is because women are more collaborative and seek consensus, and they bring out that tendency in men, who are naturally more competitive and either you’re ‘in’ with the top guy or you’re ‘out’ (which to our reptile mind means losing out on resources and therefore dying). Episode 024: Male groupthink

Loneliness is a killer and it predominantly affects men. The New York Times reports, "suicide rate for middle-aged men was 27.3 deaths per 100,000, while for women it was 8.1 deaths per 100,000." That’s more than triple the occurrence than in women. We discuss why this loneliness in the first place and what guys can do to overcome it. We share lots of ideas, from the simple (say ‘Hi’ to and make eye contact with the people who you cross paths with when you’re walking) to the more complex (volunteer or become a mentor at an organization that has a mission that you believe in). Part of the issue with men is that they don’t talk enough and when you don’t talk a lot you end up not having many people to talk to. Shahin has some suggestions to this point but is well aware part of the the fear of broaching the subject is getting rejected. Rejection stings at the best of times but when you’re already feeling your lowest it can be devastating. Of course, loneliness and depression can’t be overcome just by doing a few hours of community service or having a catch-up call with an old friend. Episode 023: Loneliness

Last week the topic was the 'sex talk' and this week we're going to the other side and discuss the anti-masturbation/ anti-sex movement, which Ariadna thinks it’s ridiculous because procreating and keeping our DNA alive is the top priority of each species but Shahin thinks it’s a great idea because he says it’s more of a fast or reset and less of an open-ended exercise in celibacy. But is not masturbating for a month similar to Dry January or cutting down on carbs? Shahin shares some benefits that come with taking a break but Ariadna has a hard time buying it. We refer to a TedX talk with Gary Wilson called The Great Porn Experiment (which please note makes “several assertions that are not supported by academically respected studies in medicine and psychology”).
