So this is an interesting episode we recorded at the tail end of the last UK ‘lockdown’. **Burly Men With Powers** The last decade has seen many changes in mainstream media, but possibly the most surprising has been the massive rise in popularity of superheroes - thanks in no small part to the MCU, the DCEU, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. What’s interesting though, is that superheroes have always been popular in animation. From Western cartoons like X-Men, Justice League Unlimited, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, to anime titles like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Casshern, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia.  So how do superheroes fit into the modern animated landscape, and what actually counts as a superhero when it comes to anime? The Second Plate.  After that it’s time for some painfully secret high school experiments (and other stuff), in Kiznaiver, and a dive into the dark fantasy world of Overlord II to watch some lizard-men in their native habitat before we head to outer space for some giant robot on giant robot action in Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky. **Somewhere Over The Redub** Subs versus dubs.  It’s the oldest continuing debate in anime, and with a variety of arguments for and against one or the other, it doesn’t look like ending any time soon. But there is one particular aspect of the debate that’s often overlooked - songs - and with that in mind, Andrew, Tucky and Rob decide to investigate whether songs in anime should be redubbed into English.  After a rousing discussion it’s back to our usual business of what we’ve been watching, which this week are part 1 of the stunning adaptation of Kore Yamazaki’s (Frau Faust), hit supernatural folklore story The Ancient Magus’ Bride, and the anime version of Kozue Amano’s (Aqua, Aria), scuba diving slice-of-life manga Amanchu! **Those Goofy Cave People** On this episode of Keyframe, Tucky and Producer Rob attempt to unpick the Academy’s “For Your Consideration” list of animated feature films that are in the running to receive a nomination for an Oscar. Join them as they get wax cynical about the awards, lament the fact that great movies like The Breadwinner and A Silent Voice didn’t get the attention they deserved because Disney/Pixar made a film about a kid who wants to be a musician and that is somehow more compelling than a film about the causes and consequences of bullying or trying to be female in Taliban controlled Afghanistan … _breathe_ … You get the point. Anyway, ignoring the fact that many deserving films have historically been almost criminally under-represented simply because they weren’t American or British, this year makes for interesting reading at the very least. After that it’s time for our featured animations, which this week are the isekai, harem, romantic comedy, fantasy In Another World With My Smartphone, the supernatural stylings of Twin Star Exorcists, and the delightfully, almost subversively charming rural antics of farmyard creatures and their wild frenemies in the wonderful The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales. **Muffin-Topping Into Mainstream** My Hero Academia has been a huge success as a series, but it’s the remarkable success of the Two Heroes movie that has Tucky and Producer Rob thinking about the changing perception of animated feature films in the West. This naturally leads to an interesting discussion about anime movies in general, live-action adaptations in the west, and our suggestions for titles that could make the transition from Japan to Western live action TV or film - which include titles like Patlabor, Eden of the East, Black Lagoon, Monster, Golgo 13 and Shiki. After that it’s time for our usual look at some of the titles that we’ve been sent, which this week are Higurashi: When They Cry and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light.
