Thank you! 2. I love listening to your show and have found so many great books at your suggestion. I finally got to read Red, White, and Royal Blue over my holiday break and i loved it. I would love another book like this one. -Heidi 3. I&rsquo;ve been in a bit of romance reading slump. I love the genre, but keep ending up with books that annoy the hell out of me. Things that frustrate me: years and years of pining, finally moving on, just to go right back to the person they pined after; power imbalances between characters (no boss/subordinate stuff, and I especially can&rsquo;t stand when someone falls in love with their damn therapist); super-alpha dudes (I like a lot of Kristen Ashley&rsquo;s female characters, but I want to bury most of her men alive). I prefer contemporary romance &ndash; I can&rsquo;t get into historical stuff, and for some reason, I just don&rsquo;t care for any royalty related stuff either. Books/authors I&rsquo;ve really enjoyed are Alisha Rai&rsquo;s The Right Swipe and Forbidden Hearts series, Alexa Martin&rsquo;s Playbook series, Jasmine Guillory, Yolanda Wallace, Zoey Castile&rsquo;s Happy Ending&rsquo;s Series, Penny Reid, and Helen Hoang. I&rsquo;m interested in m/m, m/f, f/f, or any other variation, so it doesn&rsquo;t have to be only hetero romance. I prefer more comedic/lighter stuff to heavy drama, but don&rsquo;t mind some seriousness and my favorite tropes involve forbidden love, friends to lovers, and in a m/f romance, dudes who absolutely worship their ladies. Things that frustrate me: years and years of pining, finally moving on, just to go right back to the person they pined after; power imbalances between characters (no boss/subordinate stuff, and I especially can&rsquo;t stand when someone falls in love with their damn therapist); super-alpha dudes (I like a lot of Kristen Ashley&rsquo;s female characters, but I want to bury most of her men alive). It doesn&rsquo;t necessarily have to be a romance or have descriptions of sex in it, but I would like something with a sexy vibe/feel to it. I have an urgent request for something in the literary realm that can let my mind escape the f-ed up craziness I&rsquo;m currently undergoing with my soon-to-be ex who dropped a big ol&rsquo; bomb on me and told me he&rsquo;s leaving me. I&rsquo;m in all sorts of personal crisis at the moment and I&rsquo;d love something to read at night after I tuck my two little girls into bed and have the psychic space to escape the insanity of my situation and dive into another world for a while. I know you typically only do one type of rec per request but I&rsquo;m asking for two. Here goes: 1) a kick-ass female protagonist who lives from the land, or in a world where a multitude of place-based knowledge and skills serves her well; yet, without enduring rape and all the other crap that tends to be tossed upon this kind of character in literature. I&rsquo;ve loved living off the land books since I was a kid: e.g., the Little House series, Scott O&rsquo;Dell&rsquo;s The Island of the Blue Dolphins, and the entire Jean M. Auel&rsquo;s Earth&rsquo;s Children series. I&rsquo;d love a new-to-me book or, even better, series that can have me rooting for some incredible women. Pie in the sky wish: that there would be a novel or series featuring something like this set on Themyscira featuring Diana and her amazon community. 2) another fabulous female protagonist who gets knocked off her feet by a jerk of a husband who ambushes her with a sudden and unexpected demand for a divorce and all kinds of f-uppery, who then rises up like a phoenix from the devastating flames (I had to say it) in fantastic style and overcomes the many obstacles in her way, eventually sliding into first as she wins the race to financial freedom, independence, and peace within. Bonus if she eventually meets a goddess of a lover who nurtures her tender heart and soul (this protagonist is bi and is kind of over men and their &ndash; generalizing here &ndash; serious power issues). I teach special education and I co-teach in the general education as well at the high school level. I&rsquo;ve been working on this goal for the last year or so, but I can always use some recommendations to help me along. I usually read books aloud in my specifically SPED classes, and they have enjoyed books like &ldquo;Boy21&rdquo; by Matthew Quick, &ldquo;The Westing Game&rdquo; by Ellen Raskin, &ldquo;The Hunger Games&rdquo; by Suzanne Collins, &ldquo;Love &amp; First Sight&rdquo; by Josh Sundquist, and a smattering of short stories from &ldquo;My True Love Gave to Me&rdquo; and &ldquo;Grim&rdquo; anthologies that I have pulled from in the last couple of years (thanks to Book Riot). Right now, I&rsquo;m reading them &ldquo;Whale Talk&rdquo; by Chris Crutcher, a personal favorite, and my kids are really enjoying that one as well. As you can tell, the reading level varies. Because I read the information aloud to my students, I can get away with some of the higher-leveled books or stories because we spend so much time in discussion. I&rsquo;ve loved living off the land books since I was a kid: e.g., the Little House series, Scott O&rsquo;Dell&rsquo;s The Island of the Blue Dolphins, and the entire Jean M. Auel&rsquo;s Earth&rsquo;s Children series. I&rsquo;d love a new-to-me book or, even better, series that can have me rooting for some incredible women. Pie in the sky wish: that there would be a novel or series featuring something like this set on Themyscira featuring Diana and her amazon community.2) another fabulous female protagonist who gets knocked off her feet by a jerk of a husband who ambushes her with a sudden and unexpected demand for a divorce and all kinds of f-uppery, who then rises up like a phoenix from the devastating flames (I had to say it) in fantastic style and overcomes the many obstacles in her way, eventually sliding into first as she wins the race to financial freedom, independence, and peace within. Bonus if she eventually meets a goddess of a lover who nurtures her tender heart and soul (this protagonist is bi and is kind of over men and their &ndash; generalizing here &ndash; serious power issues). The only books he has ever read are the Bible and Twilight. Later in adulthood, he also suffered a traumatic brain injury, so his ability to concentrate is sometimes low. He&rsquo;s recently decided to go for his GED and we are all very happy for him! One of the things he wants to do is read some of the books on the high school curriculum, but honestly I&rsquo;m not sure where to start him. I don&rsquo;t want to discourage him by starting him on something like Pride and Prejudice or Lord of the Flies where both the vocabulary and the syntax would be unfamiliar to him. I don&rsquo;t think he could parse the sentence structure. I&rsquo;m trying to push him towards Stephen King or other really popular, compelling stories until he gets in the physical habit of reading, but he would really like something &ldquo;literary&rdquo;. Or, at least, make me feel like I am not alone in this. Any recommendations? Thanks so much!! 2. Hi! A dear friend of mine was home schooled in a restrictive (abusive) environment. The only books he has ever read are the Bible and Twilight. Later in adulthood, he also suffered a traumatic brain injury, so his ability to concentrate is sometimes low. He&rsquo;s recently decided to go for his GED and we are all very happy for him! One of the things he wants to do is read some of the books on the high school curriculum, but honestly I&rsquo;m not sure where to start him. I don&rsquo;t want to discourage him by starting him on something like Pride and Prejudice or Lord of the Flies where both the vocabulary and the syntax would be unfamiliar to him. I don&rsquo;t think he could parse the sentence structure. I&rsquo;m trying to push him towards Stephen King or other really popular, compelling stories until he gets in the physical habit of reading, but he would really like something &ldquo;literary&rdquo;. He loves dreaming up and drawing twisted fairy tale stories/creatures, and especially loves the Alice in Wonderland mythos. He doesn&rsquo;t have the patience to sit through even a young adult novel, but I think a Middle Grade or YA graphic novel with bright colors and limited text would be fantastic, especially as it might inspire some new creatures for him to draw!
